East Riding: Car crash victim Alex Lenton's former teacher shocked by accident
CRASH victim Alex Lenton's former teacher said he "always had a smile" on his face. Lester Jones works at Beverley Grammar School, where Alex used to be a pupil. Alex, 19, is seriously ill in Hull Royal Infirmary after a crash on the A1035 at Tickton shortly after midnight on May 10. Mr Jones said: "I know Alex very well. "He used to chat to me for 20 minutes after school." Alex regularly visited his old teacher. He called in once after passing his driving test, proud of a new purchase. Mr Jones said: "He came back to show me his car." read more

NICK Barmby's drawn-out separation from Hull City could finally be resolved when the former manager's appeal is heard next week. Almost three weeks have passed since Barmby was suspended from his role as City boss before that gave way to his eventual sacking on May 8. CITY council leader Steve Brady hopes a last-minute ministerial lobby will prompt a rethink over moves to impose VAT on static caravans. The Government deadline for consultation over the issue expires today. But Councillor Brady has revealed he was involved in a cross-party telephone conference with Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury David Gauke earlier this week in a bid to persuade ministers to shelve the proposals. The city's three MPs and opposition Liberal Democrat group leader Councillor Abi Bell also took part. read more

FORMER home secretary Alan Johnson has not ruled out quitting his Hull seat to run for mayor of London in 2016. The Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle said he considered standing against Boris Johnson in this year's mayoral contest but said it was his love for Hull that inspired his decision to turn the opportunity down. However, he has refused to rule out standing as London mayor in four years' time. read more

HULL City midfielder James Harper has held talks with Doncaster Rovers as he plans a fresh start away from the KC Stadium this summer. The 31-year-old will see his contract with the Tigers expire at the end of June and he has begun his search for a new club by speaking with Rovers boss Dean Saunders. Harper endured an instantly forgettable 2011-12 season as he enjoyed just three minutes of Championship football with the Tigers. read more

HULL KR's Craig Hall hopes to be given the chance to succeed Shannon McDonnell as the club's full-back next season. McDonnell has turned down a new and improved deal at MS3 Craven Park and is leaving at the end of the season, his first in Super League. Hall is also out of contract at the end of the campaign, but he is hoping to earn a new contract at the club he joined ahead of the 2010 season. Hall, whose father Dave was Rovers' full-back when they beat Hull 10-5 in the 1980 Challenge Cup final, has experience of the full-back role at Hull and at Rovers. read more

Patriotic ants, soap-box racers and a flotilla of more than 60 ships feature on a new map of Diamond Jubilee events.
Tens of thousands of people from Hull and the East Riding are expected to take part in celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation.
The most eye-catching event is set to be a procession of boats passing under Humber Bridge on June 4, when beacons will be lit on both sides of the river.

East Riding: 'She's going to blow up the plane': 999 bomb hoax of man dumped on Facebook
A MAN caused a bomb scare after being dumped by a woman on Facebook. Unemployed Stuart Bingham dialled 999 and said a woman he had been in an online relationship with was planning to blow up a plane. He told a Humberside Police call operator the woman would be boarding a plane from Detroit to Miami with a bomb. Bingham, 38, of Bransholme, drunk four litres of cider before calling the force. He said: "She is getting on the plane with something and she shouldn't be allowed to get on the plane." read more

East Riding: 2,000 days lost to sickness at police
Officers in North Lincolnshire have lost more than 2,000 days to sickness in less than a year. A total of 2,184.5 days were lost between April last year and February this year, an average of 6.4 per officer in the B Division. The average number of days taken per officer was the second highest across the four forces that make up Humberside Police. They are also higher than the national average of 5.2. read more

East Riding: Town haulier has licence revoked
A Scunthorpe based haulier has had his transport operating licence revoked over maintenance concerns. David Anthony Hurst, from Cleakheaton, had his licence revoked following a public enquiry by the North East Traffic Commissioner. Trading as Independent Transport, Mr Hurst operated three vehicles from a base on Normandy Road, Scunthorpe. Mr Hurst will now be prevented from operating commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. read more

East Riding: Allowance more than North East Lincs
Employees at North East Lincolnshire Council who are essential car users are given an allowance of 40.9p per mile for the first 8,500 and 14.4p after that. Casual users are given 52.2p per mile for the first 8,500 miles and 14.4p for any distance after. AA spokesman Luke Bosdet said: "Current national regulations are employers can pay up to 45p expenses per mile for the first 10,000 miles and above this they will be taxed the difference. "This is a considerable improvement since 18 months ago when the figure was 40p per mile. read more
